Secret of Happiness
Feb 4th, 2009 by Raj
I pray only when I need God’s help; else I let him enjoy his own life! About 2 years ago I had lost my job and and was also going through some personal problems. Not sure what to do; I started praying, wondering what to ask? Job. May be billion dollars? But what if billion dollars come with lots of issues. In the end I said, “God give me – Happiness!”
Happiness did not come to me as a miracle but the desire to control happiness made me learn few secrets:
• Think Happy: Happiness starts by thinking of being happy. If you think about happy or funny things you feel happy. If we think something negative we feel sad; if postive feel happy. If you get negative thought in your mind, replace it with positive thought. Soon your mind will automatically start rejecting negative feelings. You will like to see funny things, read jokes and be around happy people and share your own happiness with others.
• Define your own happiness: My dad feels happy when he buys houses and properties; my mom feels happy when she cooks meal for her kids; my brother works for UNICEF, he feels happy when he is working for poor children. Friends, family and commercial ads will try to convince you to be happy in the way they see happiness. Don’t get carried away by how others perceive happiness; do what makes you happy.
• Happiness is a Journey not a destination: Real key to remember is happiness is a journey not a destination. Being engaged in a pursuit that truly challenges you is the surest route to personal satisfaction. Enjoy every piece of work you do; love the effort that you put in getting the job done. If your job is building a wall – enjoy when you select a brick for the wall, like it when you lift it & put it at right place and enjoy the success of putting each and every brick on wall. Enjoy the journey of building the wall not just the final outcome.
• Accept things as they are and not as you want them to be: Accepting the truth is the quickest way to recover from undesired result or loss. You cannot change the event that has already occurred. But if you accept what has happened – you will be able to move-on; fix things from any further damage and find a solution to the problem. Denying problem will continue to bring problem again. Understanding the problem and thinking about solution is the first step towards success.
• Healthy body has happy mind: Be healthy, healthy body has healthy mind. Healthy mind will help you handle difficult situations in a confident, positive & happy way! Kids like to play, they enjoy playing because it makes them feel happy – they are happy when they are running, jumping. Fundamentals of that happiness do not change as we grow old, we just stop enjoying it by considering our exercise as work and not as a play that can be enjoyed. Do what you like - running, play basketball, tennis, yoga, and swimming. When you start doing it - I promise it will be more fun than watching TV.
• Learn to laugh at yourself: Who likes to be around person who laugh at others but cannot take joke on themselves? People who can’t laugh at themselves are weak and are scared of making mistakes. Not able to laugh at you is taking life too seriously. You may have to draw line certain times if you find people laughing maliciously and not just for fun. But overall, laughing at yourself is the key to be able to laugh at anything.
• Live in the moment: Every moment is unique, it comes only once; you get every stage of life only one time. Have meaningful goals but make sure you are enjoying life now. Love your boyfriend or girlfriend now – tomorrow you may want to love someone else :)If you have kids, spend time with them now, soon they will be grow up and leave home to start their own life. You do not know what will happen in future, you cannot change past; what you have is present – live it happy!
